Description
Audubon's Boat-tailed Grackle, Quiscalus Major from the 1860 Bien Edition of Birds of America
John James Audubon. Boat-tailed Grackle, Quiscalus
Major, Vieill. Male 1. Female 2. Live Oak - Quercus
virens. [No plate number visible]. Drawn from Nature by J. J.
Audubon. New York: Chromolithography by J. Bien, 1860.
Chromolithographed plate from the excellent first reprint of the
famed double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's The Birds of
America. Approximate plate size: 38.5 x 26.5 inches. A lovely
image of two Boat-tailed Grackles perched in an oak tree. Very
faint marginal toning, some repairs on verso, all edges chipped or
with small holes (not affecting image). Fair. From the estate of
Scott and Stuart Gentling.
More Information:
The original plate was taken after Audubon's original life-size watercolor drawing - this chromolithograph reprint manages to capture virtually all of the brilliance of the hand-colored original. This plate has not been examined out of the frame. (It is matted, framed and glazed.)
