Description

Large Leaf from a Choir Psalter Featuring King David in Prayer

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Illuminated Manuscript featuring a Historiated Initial of King David. [Ferrara, ca. 1480]. Illuminated manuscript on vellum being from a Choir Psalter. Historiated initial approximately 3.75 x 4 inches. Leaf approximately 22 x 15.5 inches. Within the elaborately floral "D" initial set atop a golden background, which begins Psalm 26, the crowned David sits praying in profile amidst a rocky and barren landscape. David is portrayed in an elderly state, with graying hair and weary eyes. He is clothed in blue and draped in red and green. The thick historiated border is alive with action and movement amongst the flora and vignettes. Laurel wreaths of alternating color and culminating in dragon heads contain the movement within the border. The vignettes feature a bearded man, a deer, Christ and two apostles, three squabbling children, and a large panel landscape featuring putti, a grotesque bird, leopards, a deer, and a coat of arms of an abbot or bishop. Interspersed with the black rounded gothic lettering are red and blue initials and musical notations. The verso features rounded gothic lettering. The old folio number can be seen at the foot of the page. Minor rubbing to lower right corner. Fine.
