Description
Seven Complete Issues of Aspen, "The Magazine in a Box"
[Art Periodicals]. Seven Issues of Aspen,The Magazine in a Box, including: Vol. I, Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5+6, 8, 9. New York: Aspen Magazine/Phyllis Johnson, 1965-1970. First editions. Four quarto hinged boxes with contents, two quarto paper folders with contents, one 8.25 x 8.25-inch boxed double-volume set with contents. All issues collated and complete. Edited, designed, illustrated, and with contributions from some of the twentieth century's most influential artists: Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground, Marshall McLuhan, Jack Smith, John Cage, Dan Graham, George Maciunas, and numerous others. All issues housed in publisher's original box or folder. Covers rubbed and lightly soiled, with some boxes lightly split at seams; paper folders with lightly bumped corners, small tears, and rubbing. All contents generally clean and mostly appear unread or unplayed. Some occasional toning and small folds. All issues are in better than very good condition.Though Aspen initially focused on the snowy regions around its namesake for the first two issues, they enlisted the help of Andy Warhol and Rolling Stone founding editor David Dalton for Issue 3, The Pop Art Issue, and never looked back. Issue 4 explored the work of Marshall McLuhan and was designed by Quentin Fiore. Issues 5+6, the Minimalism issue, was edited and designed by noted artist /writer Brian O'Doherty. Artist/Writer Dan Graham edited Issue 8, The Fluxus Issue, and it was designed by George Maciunas. The Psychedelic Issue No. 9 was edited and designed by Angus and Hetty MacLise. Each issue features a number of various media including flexidisc and phonograph recordings, an 8mm artists' film compilation, paper multiples, a collection of advertisements, and numerous other texts and objects. A rare achievement of art and text in periodical form with each issue differing in scope but consistent in quality and vision. Scarce in this condition, complete and collated, and rarely seen with as many issues.
