Handsome Historiated Initial Featuring St. Andrew
[Illuminated Manuscript]. Illuminated Historiated Initial of St. Andrew. [Rhineland, ca. 1480]. Illuminated historiated initial being cut from a large choirbook. Approximately 6.75 x 7.25 inches. St. Andrew is situated within the large U which is decorated with undulating foliage in shades of blue and white. St. Andrew, draped in red and green, is depicted elderly and weary in a rolling landscape. He grasps the device of his martyrdom, the X-shaped cross upon which he was crucified. The whole is surrounded by large areas of gold and an alternating red and green border. The verso features three lines of text and musical notation. Bright with minor rubbing. Verso exhibits small remnants of adhesive. Fine.Auction Info
