Description

"...the art of swimming ought to be esteemed, rather as a requisite than a pleasure which it is commonly reckoned!"

Benjamin Franklin. The Art of Swimming Made Safe, Easy, Pleasant, and Healthful. To Which are Added, Cautions to Learners, and Advice to Bathers, by the Late Celebrated Dr. Benjamin Franklin. London: W. S. Johnson, [n.d., ca. 1850].

"Johnson's Edition." Twelvemo. iv, [20] pages. Hand-colored folding frontispiece depicting diagrams of various swimming techniques.

Original printed wrappers. Front wrapper detached but present. Wrappers chipped and browned with a few shallow creases; small, neat embossed book store stamp in lower margin of rear wrapper. A couple of leaves with chipped fore-edges. Frontispiece and title page splitting along spine. Fragile, but in generally very good condition.

Benjamin Franklin learned to swim as a boy in Boston and was such an avid swimmer that he invented the swim fin when he was only ten years old. When he first visited London, he swam in the Thames River and even considered becoming a full-time swimming instructor. Franklin's early and enthusiastic encouragement of swimming earned him a place in the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1968. Originally written in 1781, this instructional pamphlet is surprisingly scarce in any edition.
