Gifford Pinchot Two Typed Letters Signed. (1) Three pages, 8.5" x 11", February 16, 1919, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Senator Howard Sutherland, regarding defects in the "Mineral Leasing Bill". (2) Two pages, 7" x 8.75", February 28, 1919, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, again to Senator Howard Sutherland, regarding the senator's view of the seniority system in the United States Senate.More Information:
Also sold with an unsigned carbon copy of Senator Sutherland's caustic response to Pinchot's February 28 letter, one page, 8.5" x 11", March 8, 1919, [Washington, D.C.]. The first letter has paperclip dimples and light rust at the top left corner. The second letter and the carbon copy have filing pin holes at the top left. All very good or better.
Howard Sutherland was a Republican who represented West Virginia in both houses of the United States Congress. In 1920, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president of the United States. He received 17 delegates, about 2%, on the first ballot, and even less support on the following two ballots before he withdrew. Sutherland was defeated for reelection to the senate in 1922.
