Description

[Andrew Jackson] Andrew J. Hutchings Slave Replacement Receipt for a slave couple and their six children which had sold for $6,230. One lined page, 7.75" x 9.75", January 28, 1842, [likely Jackson, Tennessee], signed by the original seller and conveyed to Hutchings, who had "lost or mislaid" the original title. Left edge is slightly irregular. Near fine. Ex. The Papers of John Coffee.

Andrew Jackson Hutchings (1812-1841) was an orphaned grandnephew of Andrew Jackson's wife, Rachel. He was under the guardianship of the Jacksons after his father, John Hutchings, died. (In addition to being related to Rachel Jackson, John Hutchings was Andrew Jackson's business partner.) Andrew J. Hutchings was married to Mary Coffee, the daughter of John Coffee.

 

According to the document, William Herman, "as administrator of James McMurray" had previously sold to Andrew Jackson Hutchings "[in part] at public Sale, for the sum of Six Thousand Two hundred & thirty dollars these negro Slaves to wit Ned aged about 45 years, Mima aged about 40 years, and their children Sallie, 20 yrs, Finch 15 years, Phill 12 years old, Mary 8 years old, Nelson Six years old, Nancy, 4 years old, the title to which slaves I have heretofore conveyed to the said Andrew J. Hutchings, which he says has been lost or mislaid & I do therefore make this admission that I have heretofore recd payment for said slaves". The docketing on the verso reads, "Wm Herman/ Bill Sale Negroes/ To/ Andw J. Hutchings". The title is signed, "William Herman/ Executor of James McMury".
