Description
[George Washington] Acts of the State of New Hampshire Broadside. One page, 15" x 19.25", June 1792. Portsmouth: Printed by John Melcher. Two Acts are listed: one "directing the mode of balloting for, and appointing the Electors of this state" and the second "directing the mode of choosing Representatives to the Congress". Signed in type by Josiah Bartlett. Flattened folds and wide margins, near fine.Desperate to retire after his first term, George Washington was convinced by all factions to seek re-election. The Union was still in a fragile state of infancy, and all agreed Washington would provide a unifying symbol. Even Jefferson and Hamilton (who agreed on little else) both considered Washington's re-election as a national necessity. Congress officially tabulated the votes of the election on February 13, 1793, and Washington was re-elect unanimously.
