Description

Indian Trader Bond. One partly-printed page, 7.5" x 12", n.p., July 6, 1744, stating that "Henry Smith of Toleo in Lancaster County & Province of Pennsylvania Indian Trader" was "held and firmly bound unto Edward Shippen of the City of Philadelphia & Province aforesaid Merch't, in the sum of one hundred and nineteen pounds & eighteen shills." Shippen was a merchant who was trained for mercantile pursuits. He founded Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and was one of the founders of the College of New Jersey. Toned and foxed with folds and a seal in the lower right corner. Bears the signatures of Smith, John Mackarall, and William Trent.
