[Martin Luther King, Jr.]. Carbon Copy of Quotes Used in Stride Toward Freedom with Transmittal Envelope and Related Documents. One page, 8.5" x 10", circa 1958. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, first book, Stride Toward Freedom, is a first-hand account of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Just months after the boycott's end [December 20, 1956], King was being asked to write a book chronicling the year long struggle against Alabama's bus segregation laws, which ended with a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court finding said laws unconstitutional. In the book he discusses the racial tension in Alabama before and after the boycott and his personal beliefs in nonviolent resistance.The quotes, seven in all, represent testimonials praising King's work. Examples include Norman Cousins of the "Saturday Review" who said: "King's book neither exhorts nor incites. It tells a story . . . in an appealing mood of warmth and creative good will." Ralph McGill of the "Atlanta Constitution" called it "a valuable book which is necessary reading." Benjamin E. Mays of Morehouse College believed that "Segregationists and integrationists alike will read the book with great profit." Scattered spots of foxing and toning, especially at the edges.
With an original transmittal envelope from Hermine Popper, one of King's editors, addressed to Dr. King. Also, Copy of a Martin Luther King, Jr., Typed Book Dedication. One page, 8.5" x 11", Montgomery, May 1958. King thanks his friend Lawrence D. Reddick and Mrs. Hermine Popper for their help editing, Maude Ballou for her encouragement, the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, and his wife, Coretta. [and:] Craig Wylie Typed Letter Signed. One page, 5.5" x 8.5", Boston, November 15, 1957, to Maude Ballou. Wylie expresses disappointment on behalf of Houghton Mifflin Company that they will not be publishing King's book and adds that "he has certainly found an excellent publisher in Harper's."
Stride Toward Freedom was published on September 17, 1958, to critical acclaim.
