Description

Richard M. Nixon: Nine Pages of Handwritten Notes. Having lost both his 1960 bid for president and his 1962 run for governor of California, former vice president Richard Nixon retired from politics. With a longing to return to the political arena growing and with the 1968 presidential election looming, he decided to take a six month tour the world to focus on foreign policy, the focal point of his administration.

Titled "Report on World" and dated August 1966, Nixon outlines his views on Vietnam, saying that we are "at a great turning point" and it is "Time for [a] decision to end [the] war." Nixon then outlines his plan for doing just that saying he must "Unite the U.S. . . . Inform our allies . . . quit talking with 2 voices . . . Don't change policy toward China," the result of which will be "Peace & freedom & progress."

After a few brief notes about Hawaii, he continues his discussion of Vietnam with greater detail. Nixon believes that the "1st war" will be fought at home. This would entail uniting "our parties [presumably he is speaking of the Republican and Democratic Parties here]" and our allies. Without the U.S. united, the "War will be lost in US." He suggests that we "fight our war," but "not ground war." If a ground war becomes necessary, however, we must "avoid long ground war." He concludes by saying "We have awesome military power . . . The Enemy cannot win . . . We can win . . . The question is when."

Nixon's prevailing theme, found throughout all of these pages, is the uniting of the American people and their allies, something that the Johnson administration had failed, in Nixon's estimate, to do (a topic he discusses briefly in the notes). In addition to the war in Vietnam, he briefly discusses the political situation stateside.
