Description

[Slavery]. Group of Five Slavery Related Receipts, dating between 1836 and 1844. Four of the documents are receipts for the sale of a total of twelve slaves sold to "Lorenzo D. Almon". Each receipt includes the amount paid, date, and ages of the slaves. A fifth document dated May 31, 1836, is the copy of a receipt and agreement made between Almon and A.R. Hunter for an investment to be used for the purchase and re-sale of slaves. According to the receipt, a total of $8,977 dollars was spent on the purchase of an unspecified number of slaves, who were then sold for $11,975. All documents have folds with partial separations thereat, uneven toning and foxing. A unique documentation of the practice of speculating in the slave trade.
