Description

Robert Fulton Clipped Signature. 7.5" x 1.5" (sight), New York, May 3, 1814. Excised from a larger document, Fulton has written, in full: "I am Sir respectfully your / most obedient / Robt Fulton." Robert Fulton (1765-1815) is often erroneously credited as the inventor of the steamboat. His legacy lay, rather, in making maritime steam power commercially viable. Fulton's historic moment came in 1807 when he launched the North River Steamboat (later Clermont) on a successful journey upriver from New York City to Albany. Matted and framed to an overall size of 11.5" x 5.5".
