[Telegraph]. Archive of Telegraph Material comprised of one letter, three pamphlets, documents concerning societies of former telegraphers, one poem, and one list spanning the years 1845 through 1911.Of note is a William H. Seward Letter Signed, two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, February 20, 1866, to O. N. Palmer regarding a commission. In part: "I have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 27 ultimo requesting that Colonel Bulkley of the Intercontinental Telegraph Company may receive a commission from this government and kindly inclosing for my perusal a printed copy of his report...With reference to your request in regard to a commission I would advise you to make direct application to the Department within whose province it is to confer the appointment you desire."
Also included are three pamphlets, one of which is of importance to the history of the telegraph. "Description of the American Electro Magnetic Telegraph," published in 1845 and written by Alfred Vail, partner of Samuel F. B. Morse and co-inventor of the electrical telegraph system. His twenty-four page work gave the details of a working telegraph system with illustrations and included the entire Morse alphabet. With Vail's work is a program for the fifth annual meeting (1885) of the Old Time Telegraphers' Association and an address titled, "The Importance of Collecting and Preserving the Relics of the Beginnings of the Telegraph," delivered to the "annual convention of the Old Time Telegraphers and Military Telegraph Association..." in Washington, August 20, 1891.
Other items include: William Bender Wilson Letter to the Society of The United States Military Telegraph Corps, one printed page, 5.5" x 8.5", New York, December 15, 1911, regarding pension benefits for members. [and:] William H. Young TLS. One page, 5.5" x 8.5", on Telegraphers' Mutual Benefit Association letterhead, Washington, May 31, 1883, to George C. Maynard soliciting his membership in the second division of the TMBA. [and:] Application for Membership in the Second Division of the Telegraphers' Mutual Benefit Association. [and:] Banquet of the Society of the U. S. Military Telegraph Corps and the Old Time Telegraphers Association Card. One page, 5.25" x 4", New York, August 19, 1885, for their annual reunion. [and:] Old Time Telegraphers and United States Military Telegraph Association Complimentary Excursion Card. One page, 5.25" x 4", New York, August 18, 1885, for their annual reunion. [and:] Poem "The Choppers Temptation." Three handwritten pages, 6" x 10.25" (length and width varies), n. p., n. d. [and:] Telegraphic Historical Society of North America Organization Meeting List. One page, 8.25" x 11", Washington, December 5, 1894, listing the twelve founding members of the society, including George C. Maynard who was the Washington agent for Bell Telephone and was instrumental in the spread of phone usage in the capital.
