Description
[Abraham Lincoln]. William O. Stoddard Autograph Letter Signed. Two integral pages, 5.5" x 7.25", on his personal letterhead, Madison [New Jersey], November 1, 1921. Writing to Abraham Griffith, Stoddard (1835-1925), an acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln's from their younger days and, later, the president's assistant secretary during his first term, discusses the change he noticed in Lincoln during the course of their friendship, in part:"My study of Abraham Lincoln began in Illinois, some years before the Civil War and continued in near association. Perhaps the most notable feature of his grand character was his capacity for continuous growth . . . mental, moral, spiritual, under fire. I saw him, day after day, developing to meet the requirements of tremendous and often unexpected emergencies, trying and multiform. He became another man, than the one I could remember sitting with me in my editorial office in Illinois. I look back, now, and see him as a monumental presentation of the great idea of Growth."
Smoothed folds. Minor ink smudging on page two, probably as Stoddard wrote the letter. With the original transmittal envelope accomplished in Stoddard's hand.
