Description
[Abraham Lincoln]. Joshua Fry Speed Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 10", Washington, December 1, 1861. Addressed to Capt. Charles Champion Gilbert, Speed, Lincoln's closest friend, writes regarding a brief interview with General McClellan and President Lincoln: "Last night I had an interview with Genl McClellan & the President separately. McClellan promised that on Monday he would make you a brigadier with orders to report to Buel. It may be gratifying to you to know that he spoke in high terms of you and was very willing to accede to the request of your friends in recommending your promotion to the President." Joshua F. Speed (1814-1882) was at one time the roommate of Abraham Lincoln during their younger days in Springfield, Illinois. The two men became lifelong friends.Directly beneath Speed's letter, Gilbert has written, in part: "Mr. Speed is a gentleman of this city a former law partner of the President and does a considerable private business with him. He has been using a recommendation for my promotion for some time. . . . it may come to pass." Gilbert (1822-1903), a veteran of the Mexican War, did get his star -- temporarily: blamed for botching the Battle of Perryville, he ended the war a major, sitting at a desk. Smoothed folds.
