Description
Massachusetts Merchant Nathaniel Cushing Archive, dating between 1784 and 1823 and including two sheets of business account transactions for John Hancock. The archive also contains near fifty business statements, accounting sheets, invoices, receipts, and other documents.Nathaniel Cushing (1762-1827), a member of the accomplished Cushing family of Massachusetts, lived in Pembroke, and later, Hanover. He was a partner in the ownership of a Hanover factory that made anchors, many which were sold to the U.S. Navy. (Cushing likely supplied five anchors for the USS Constitution in 1794.) He also built ships and did a lively business with numerous Massachusetts residents, including John Hancock. Contained in this archive are two sheets of business account transactions with dated entries for Hancock:
(1) One sheet accounts for business done in the fall of 1800 and is signed, "Boston November 7th 1800/ Errors Excepted/ for John Hancock/ [signed] John H. Bowes." Docketed on the verso, "John Hancocks account/ Settled Nov 7th/ 1800/ chgd works";
(2) The other sheet begins with the header, "Sales of Eleven Anchors on account Risque of Mr. Nathaniel Cushing by John Hancock Viz." The document proceeds by listing the dates (all dates are spring and summer 1799), cost, and recipient of each transaction. The document is signed, "Boston, July 12, 1799/ Errors Excepted/ for John Hancock/ [signed] John H. Bowes." Docketed on the verso, "John Hancocks/ account/ Settled/ July 12th 1799/ chgd works/ Brot from Feby 22 [17]99."
Similar account transaction sheets and other business documents with dated entries are included for other individuals. All documents are toned, yet in fine condition.

Business documents exist for Thomas Cushing, Jotham Lincoln, Andrew Leach, Rynes Bates, Joseph Cushing, Ebenezer Boyd, Joseph Field, Joseph Blake, Samuel Spear, and many others. Documents are also included for the outfitting of various ships, including the Adeline and the Olympus, which was being "outfit to the Mediterranean." These ship-related documents often include "Port Charges Disbursements" and cash payments to various captains. The various other invoices and receipts which are included are for a variety of goods, including iron products, barrels of cider, hay, timber, coal, tea, rum, wine, tobacco, coal, sugar, and more. One statement is included from 1790 for "Building a Vessel."
