Description

[Revolutionary War] and [John Hancock]. Broadside: State of Massachusetts-Bay. In the House of Representatives June 8, 1779. [Boston: Thomas and John Fleet, 1779.] Two pages on one sheet, 8.75" x 14.25", signed in print "John Hancock" as speaker and "John Avery" as deputy secretary, resolving that "Eight Hundred Men, Non-commissioned Officers included . . . be raised to serve from the Time of their being inlisted, or detached, until the first Day of January next, unless sooner discharged." In the top margin is written in ink, "for Capt. Samson & Harlon Plymton." Toned paper with separations beginning at some folds. A separation along a fold in the top margin has been repaired. Some edges chipped and uneven.

The introductory paragraph reads: "In the House of Representatives, June 8, 1779. Whereas it appears that an Agreement was made between the four New-England States (in Consequence of a Recommendation from Congress) at Springfield, on the 30th of July 1777 to keep up a certain Number of Men in the State of Rhode-Island, so long as the Enemy kept in Force there-and as the Enemy seem determined to maintain the Post in that Quarter, they will have it in their Power to make such Depredations as they please, unless there is sufficient Force to repel them."
