[Revolutionary War]. Daniel Boone Document Signed as a lieutenant colonel of militia. One page, 7.75" x 2", n. p., circa November 1782. Ten months after the surrender of Lord Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 9, 1781, which effectively ended the American Revolutionary War in the east, fighting along the western frontier continued and was particularly brutal and violent as the native Indians and their British allies fought American settlers in what is known today as the "Year of Blood."On August 19, 1782, in one of the final battles of the war, 182 Kentucky militiamen were slaughtered when they were ambushed by a combined force of 300 Indians and fifty American and Canadian loyalists near the Licking River in modern-day Kentucky. The Americans suffered seventy-two killed while the British/Indians only lost seven men. Brigadier general George Rogers Clark, the "Conqueror of the Northwest," was chastised for allowing the debacle at the Battle of Blue Licks to occur. In retaliation, Gen. Clark sent a force of 1,000 men across the Ohio River in what would be the last major campaign of the war. Famed frontiersman Daniel Boone was among the survivors of the Battle of Blue Licks, but sadly, his son, Israel, and his nephew, Thomas, were not. Boone, with his Fayette County Militia, was all too happy to join Clark in his trip across the river which culminated in the burning of several unoccupied Shawnee villages along the Great Miami River.
Having returned several months later, Boone signed this acknowledgment of the use of a horse during the campaign, in full as written: "I do certify that a Horse the Property of Benjamin Netherland was in Public Service for the Use of my Company of Fayette Militia as the late Expedition Against the Shawanes Commanded by B. Genl. Clarke from the 24th Day of Octr. untill the 23d Day of November 1782 being in the whole 38 Days." Toned. Mounted to a backing sheet to an overall size of 8" x 3".
