Description

John A. Sutter Autograph Postcard Signed "J. A. Sutter." Two pages, 5.25" x 3", Washington, August 9, 1876. Writing to Francis D. Clark of New York regarding his age, Sutter writes with an unsteady hand: "On the last 1st of March I was Seventy Three Years old." Sutter (1803-1880) is best remembered for his role in the California gold rush. Following the discovery of gold by James W. Marshall, Sutter constructed a sawmill upon the site of the find. He later established Sutter's Fort, which became the city of Sacramento. Unevenly toned.

With two invitations to meetings of "The Associated Pioneers, Territorial Days of California" and a copy of Samuel C. Upham's "Song of the Argonauts: The Days of 'Forty-Nine."
