Description

Beautiful Pre Civil War Circa 1840 U.S. Regulation Eagle Drum. 17" diameter, now just under 12" high, however the top hoop is broken and the bottom hoop pushed down, and the drum would actually be 14"+ high were the hoops complete and properly placed. Body fabricated of maple, the eagle beautifully painted on a lighter blue background than normally encountered on Civil War period drums, with the paint 95% intact and very sound. Retains what appear to be the original ropes and leather tighteners. The top hoop is broken, although all present and certainly repairable. The top edge of the hoop has some scattered old splintering but a considerable portion of the shortening appears to be the result of very heavy honest use. Bottom hoop fine, as are the heads. The hoops appear to have been originally red, however deep age patina has darkened them considerably. A most attractive American military eagle drum that likely saw service in the Mexican War.
