Description

World War I Memoir Inscribed to President Wilson "I Was There" With The Yanks On The Western Front, 1917-1919 by C. LeRoy Baldridge. (New York: G.P. Putman's Sons, 1919). First edition, not stated. Unpaginated, black and white and color plates. Extensively illustrated memoir in picture and verse of life on the Western Front during World War I, with verses by Hilmar R. Baukhage. Baldridge's sketches were made during a year's service with the French army and a year's service with the AEF on special duty with the AEF newspaper "Stars & Stripes." Presentation copy inscribed by Baldridge to President Woodrow Wilson. On the front free endpaper, Baldridge has drawn an image of a soldier (possibly, a self-portrait?), underneath the inscription: "To President Wilson, Here's Looking at you Sir! C. Le Roy Baldridge -" He has also signed and dated the drawing at the bottom of the page. Good, slight chipping to the edges of the pictorial board covers, two water spots on the front cover, from cover loose. Extremely interesting and unusual.
