Description

Superb, Virtually Pristine Abraham Lincoln Tintype. This 1.375" x 1.625" item is the premier image from a set picturing prominent American political and military leaders, published by Abbott of New York around 1862. Because the low relief brass frame offered little protection, these often suffered surface wear or damage, and the cardboard card on reverse is even more often stained, damaged, or missing entirely. Also, they are often missing the original loop for suspension at the top. The present example is probably the finest we have ever seen, essentially mint but for a trivial, light, and almost undetectable irregularity (as made) in the field, which deserves notice only because the piece is otherwise so pristine. For someone seeking a representative Lincoln tintype, it would be hard to find a better choice.
