Description

Charles Magnus Jefferson Davis Songsheets. Confederate President Jefferson Davis was a convenient target for Northern derision and was subject to derogatory media attacks of every conceivable type. Here the celebrated New York publisher Charles Magnus capitalizes on Jeff's infamy with two commercial songsheets having color lithographs. Both sheets are from the Henry E. Luhrs Collection and are as follows:
"Jeff Davis", one page, 5" x 8". This early war song dominates the front of a four-page piece of lined stationery. Portraits of Davis and John C. Breckenridge flank a circular map of the Confederacy held by a grinning red devil. Very fine condition with only the slightest soiling and a crease on one corner
"Oh Jeff! Oh Jeff! How Are You Now?", one page, 5" x 8". On May 10, 1865 a fleeing Davis was captured near Irwinville, Georgia. False rumor that he was attempting to evade capture by wearing female clothing gave rise to a popular myth no doubt fueled by sheets such as this example. Here Davis, in mythical drag, is surrounded by Union cavalrymen as his final wartime drama plays out. Crisp and extra fine condition.
