Description
James Madison and James Monroe Ships Papers Signed: "James Madison " as president and "Jas Monroe", as secretary of state, one page, 10.5" x 15". On vellum. Issued out of Washington, but dated New York, July 17, 1815. Countersigned: "David Gelston Collector" of the District of New York. Ship's papers for "the Ship Carolina Ann of New York Thomas Betts, master or commander of the burthen of Three hundred thirteen & 93/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with Fifteen men To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seizure or molestation the said Ship appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only." Scalloped edge at top. Full paper seal affixed with red wax at bottom left. Folds and creased. Fine signatures of Madison and Monroe. A vertical fold passes through the "J" of "James Madison" and at the "n" of "Monroe" with creases passing through the "o" and "oe" as well. Overall, an attractive document with excellent nautical vignettes at top. Documents bearing the signatures of two U.S. Presidents are extremely desirable.James Monroe served as Secretary of State during both Madison administrations, from 1811-1814 and 1815-1817, succeeding him and serving two terms as President, from 1817-1825. David Gelston was a prominent figure in New York politics and served as Collector of the Port of New York from 1801-1820.
