Description

Basil Rathbone autograph letter signed to Samuel Goldwyn and related telegrams and documents. (1936) Vintage autograph letter signed ("Basil Rathbone"), 6-pages on 2-integral 8 x 11.25 in. (203 x 279 mm.) leaves of Hotel Dunapalota, Ritz Budapest stationery, 2 December 1936. Rathbone writes to studio head Samuel Goldwyn regarding a delay in contract signing, in part: ...Five years ago I was under contract to M. G. M. & I was miserable...After 'Cheney', I was typed & I was allowed to do nothing but 'teacup & white tie parts.'...I accepted Count Anteoni in 'The Garden of Allah' [without reading the script because David Selznick told me the story & the part as he told it was colourful & vital & important. We came to shoot it & it was nothing...I must either be very important to you or I will go on freelancing. I earned $120,000 last year and $140,000 this...it is not money I am after (much as I appreciate it!) I have been a very important actor both in London & New York for years... The letter is accompanied with related letters and telegrams. Fine condition.
