The Earliest Example of a Lincoln Assassination Reward Broadside

Abraham Lincoln Assassination Reward Poster. Broadside, 7.25 x 8.125 inches. [Washington, D.C.], [circa April 16, 1865]. Rare printed broadside announcing a $30,000 reward for the capture of John Wilkes Booth and Secretary of State Seward's assailant Lewis Payne, issued immediately after Lincoln's assassination by Colonel Lafayette C. Baker. Baker was considered one of the leading spies for the Union during the Civil War. Stanton summoned Baker on April 15 to lead the hunt for the assassins. After Baker met with Secretary Stanton, he issued this remarkable broadside: "The Common Council of Washington, D.C., have offered a reward of $20,000 for the arrest and conviction of these Assassins, in addition to which I will pay $10,000." The additional $10,000 came out of Baker's own account as authorized by the War Department. The broadside also gives detailed descriptions of John Wilkes Booth and Lewis Payne, but he is not mentioned by name.

Shortly after this broadside was issued, the government increased the reward amount to $100,000 for the capture of Booth, removed Payne, and added David Herold and John Surratt, Jr. Payne had already been captured when, upon arriving at Mary Surratt's boarding house on April 17, he was met by Union soldiers.

Condition: Slightly trimmed at top and bottom, some minor offsetting, old residue at left and right sides, rice paper backed by professional conservator. Overall fine.
