Description

Sam Houston Surveyor Commission Signed as president of the Republic of Texas. One page, 8" x 10", Washington [on-the-Brazos], January 1, 1844. The commission grants "...George H. Bringhurst...elected to the Office of County Surveyor of the County of Harris, in said Republic...full authority to exercise and discharge all, and singular, the Duties, Obligations, and Trusts, to the said Office appertaining..." Houston's large, bold signature with paraph is at the top of the document, to the right of the large blind embossed Republic of Texas seal. Countersigned by Anson Jones as secretary of state. Heavily toned along the right side and lower edge, but not affecting the text. Horizontal folds have weakened to the point of detachment, but the document is held securely at the edges within a display folder. The damage passes through the paraph under Houston's signature, but there is no loss of text.
