Description
"D. B. Cooper" 1971 Ransom Money. Unknown Series $20 Federal Reserve Note. Certified and encapsulated by PCGS Currency with a custom insert picturing the 1971 artist's sketch of the sunglasses-wearing skyjacker. Found by eight-year-old Brian Ingram along the banks of the Columbia River in Washington on February 10, 1980, this is one of the only known group of currency notes that can be linked to the historic and infamous event. All the notes from this group were damaged by their exposure to the elements. This present example is approximately 1.4" x 1.1" with small portions of the Jackson portrait, a San Francisco "L" Reserve Bank designation, and a serial number.
The D. B. Cooper Story (XII): It was more than eight years after the skyjacking that any trace of the ransom money was found. Let's let Brian Ingram tell the amazing story: "I was eight years old and on vacation with my parents on February 10, 1980, when I found about $5,800 of the ransom money along the banks of the Columbia River near Vancouver, Washington. We were going to make a fire along the riverbank. I was on my hands and knees smoothing out the sand with my right arm, and I uncovered three bundles of money just below the surface. My uncle thought we should throw it in the fire." (Luckily, he didn't do that.) His family turned the money over to the FBI who confirmed that these tattered notes were indeed part of the original $200,000 D. B. Cooper ransom payment. Brian's lucky find remains to this day the only currency that can be positively linked to this historic event. Eventually, the FBI returned a portion of the bills to Ingram who has kept them in his possession up until now.
