Description
Unidentified Union Preacher's Letter on U.S. Christian Commission Letterhead. Three and one-half pages, 5" x 8", October 25, 1864, City Point. The preacher writes about Fort Davis skirmishes and seeing General Grant: "While I was crossing the battlefield where our boys took the rebel works on the Weldon R.R. I picked up a gun barrel and shall take it home with me. . . . [at Fort Davis] I could see our line of pickets and the line of Rebel pickets a little way beyond. There was constant firing between the pickets and I could see the flash of the guns. The balls came whizzing over our heads and I saw the dirt fly a few rods ahead of us when the balls struck the ground. . . . Did I tell you in my last that I have seen Gen. Grant? I had a great view of him last week." Fine.Auction Info
