Carried in the spacesuit of Commander Scott while he drove the first lunar vehicle on the moon
Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Carried Miniature LRV001 Lunar Rover
License Plate with Photo with Signatures of the Crew Beneath, and
Embroidered Mission Insignia Patch (Silver XV), in Matted Display
with Certificate of Authenticity from Dave Scott. An aluminum
plate of 1.25" x 0.75" bearing the text: "MOON/ LRV 001/ 1971" with
a NASA logo at upper left and a Boeing logo at upper right. Boeing
was the prime contractor for the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) and
they manufactured a small number of these mini plates for the first
Lunar Rover; Scott carried them in his space suit knee pocket on
all three lunar EVAs. Apollo 15 was the first to carry this "moon
buggy" and is considered to be the most successful of the lunar
missions from a scientific standpoint. The 9.75" x 7.75" B&W photo shows Scott in the driver's seat of the LRV on the lunar surface. Below is written in black felt tip: "To [name blacked out] with warm personal regards from crew of Apollo 15 and our thanks for the best vehicle on the moon./ Dave Scott", "Al Worden", and "Jim Irwin". The patch is of the extremely rare AB Emblem crew patch with "XV" in silver thread in the background as well as the "E" paying tribute to the designer Emilio Pucci. These patches alone can sell for $1000+. These items are matted to an overall 17" x 13.5". This is the first one of these that Heritage has sold since Spring 2010! Text of COA seen below. Very fine.
"Apollo Lunar Rover No 1 License Plate, "LRV 001"
"I hereby certify that the miniature metal Lunar Rover license plate, 'LRV 001', measuring 1.5" x 0.9", included with this letter and mounted with an Apollo 15 patch (silver XV), a photo, and signatures of all three crewmembers (Dave Scott, Al Worden, and Jim Irwin), was carried on Apollo Lunar Rover No. 1 during Apollo 15, the first extended scientific exploration of the Moon, July 26-Aug 7, 1971
"In commemoration of the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), the first vehicle to be driven on another world, I designed and had produced this small LRV-001 license plate for use as a presentation memento after our mission to the Moon. This license plate was carried in a pocket of my Apollo A7L-B EVA Spacesuit during our nearly three day stay on the Moon as we drove 27.76 km across the Hadley Apennine region of the Moon during approximately 19 hours of three lunar surface EVAS.
"Apollo 15 was the fourth manned lunar landing and the first 'J' mission extended scientific exploration of the Moon. I was Commander, Al Worden was Command Module Pilot and Jim Irwin was Lunar Module Pilot. Jim Irwin and I landed the lunar module 'Falcon' on the Moon between Hadley Rille and the Apennine Mountains, an area located on the southeast edge of Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains). Using the first Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), we travelled 27.9 km (17.3 miles) conducting three separate excursions to explore unique geological features in three distinct locations. We each logged 18 hours and 35 minutes in extravehicular activity (EVA); and we collected 77kg (170 pounds) of lunar surface rocks and soil. The 'Falcon' remained on the lunar surface for 66 hours and 54 minutes, after which we completed a direct rendezvous with the Command and Service Module (CSM) 'Endeavor' in lunar orbit. Apollo 15 concluded the mission with a Pacific Ocean splashdown and recovery by the USS Okinawa
"This Lunar Rover #1 license plate has been in my personal collection since we returned from the Moon.
