Description

Paris, Texas, Fire Department Petition. Four pages, 8" x 12.5", April 8, 1884. Eighty-three residents donate money to "aid the fire Dept" by buying horses to "convey [the] apparatus" of the "Engine & Hose Co." On lined paper; toned with some separation at the folds. Near very good.

More Information:

"Whereas we the undersigned beleiving [sic] it the duty of evry [sic] citizen of Paris to aid the fire Dept in its efforts to protect the property of the citizens from fire and whereas the Engine & Hose Co's to render them more efficient need horses to convey their apparatus to and from fires and are unable to secure horses in any other way. Theirfore [sic] we agree to pay amts set opposite our names for the purpose of same." Following the text are signatures of Paris residents and the amounts (between 50ยข and $15) they donated. Some names have "Pd" beside their names; the others, presumably, would pay at another time.
