Description

Robert E. B. Baylor Legal Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 12.5", n.d. [possibly late 1840s], n.p. This page, numbered "18", contains a frayed left edge where it has been separated from its original source, which was possibly bound. Fine.

More Information: While living in Alabama in 1839, Baylor (1793-1873) was converted at a Baptist revival meeting; later that year, he became a Baptist minister and moved to Texas. He was elected judge in 1841 and was instrumental in writing the first state constitution, which paved the way for Texas' annexation into the United States. With Baylor's leadership, Baylor University, a Baptist university, was established in 1845 at Independence, Texas. The next year, Texas' first governor, J. P. Henderson, appointed Baylor a district judge; Baylor served in this capacity for twenty-five years.
