Description
[California] New Spain: Don Antonio Maria de Bucareli y Ursua Document Signed appointing Santiago Carreto as Chief Commissioner of the royal army. Eight pages on "Carolus III" sealed paper, 8.25" x 11.75", "capital de Mexico", November 11, 1777. In Spanish, the document outlines Carreto's duties as well as the region he is to oversee. Joseph de Gorraez adds his signature as public scribe. Original hand stitching remains, with light dampstaining at top and bottom, otherwise very good to near fine.Bucareli was appointed viceroy of New Spain 1771 and served until his death in 1779. Under his rule the Spanish explored and subsequently settled along what is now the California coast. The strong Spanish presence deterred Russian expansion from the north. Ex William L. Clements Library.
