Description

Apollo 15 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut John Young, Serial Number 070. This 35mm sterling silver medal is in its original plastic box with the "070" sticker on the bottom. There were 304 of these originally struck for this 1971 mission. Due to a spelling error on the landing site (Appennines instead of Apennines), only 127 were actually flown along with crewmembers Scott, Worden, and Irwin. The balance was returned to the Robbins Company for correction but was not ready in time for the takeoff. Apollo 15 was the fourth manned lunar landing, July 26-August 7, 1971, and the first of the extended "J" missions with longer durations on the moon and more emphasis on science. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling hallmark. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from John Young stating: "I hereby certify that Apollo 15 silver Robbins Medal, serial number 070, was flown to the moon aboard Apollo 15 July 26-August 7, 1971. I obtained it through the Astronaut Office and it has been a part of my personal collection since the mission."
