Description

Apollo 13 Recovery Ship U.S.S. Iwo Jima Hat Directly from the Personal Collection of Backup Mission Commander John Young, Certified and Signed on the Cap Itself. A navy blue, 100% wool, baseball-style cap with yellow cloth bullion on the bill and an embroidered "U.S.S. IWO JIMA ASTRONAUT YOUNG APOLLO 13" on the front. Apollo 13 suffered what could easily have been a catastrophic and fatal explosion on board the service module two days into their flight to the moon. A brave, well-trained, and well-commanded crew along with a brilliant group of scientists and engineers at Mission Control performed the actions necessary to get the mission back to Earth safely. Thus, the oft used nickname for the mission: a "successful failure." John Young was the mission's backup commander and was on the recovery ship Iwo Jima to welcome and debrief the crew after the capsule splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean. Cap has original tag and markings from Pittsburg Hat & Cap Co./ Harvard Sports Headwear. Size 7 1/8. Excellent condition.

Under the bill of this hat, Young has written: "Worn By Me on the Iwo Jima On The Apollo 13 Recovery. John Young".
