Description

"It was tough, reliable and almost cuddly."

Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong Typed Letter Signed with Content Regarding His Apollo 11 Lunar Surface Extravehicular Mobility Unit. A one page letter, 8.5" x 11", July 14, 1994, Lebanon, Ohio, on his letterhead, to "The EMU gang at Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX 77058", signed "Neil Armstrong". Of course, he's talking about his spacesuit here but what the Apollo astronauts wore on the lunar surface was much more than a simple spacesuit; it was a completely self-contained system that provided environmental protection, mobility, life support, and communications, essentially a spacecraft (as he calls it here). This humorous and self-deprecating letter was written to the staff at NASA who helped develop this suit, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the historic flight of Apollo 11. It reads, in full:

"To the EMU gang:

"I remember noting a quarter century or so ago that an emu was a 6 foot Australian flightless bird. I thought that got most of it right.

"It turned out to be one of the most widely photographed spacecraft in history. That was no doubt due to the fact that it was so photogenic. Equally responsible for its success was its characteristic of hiding from view its ugly occupant.

"Its true beauty, however, was that it worked. It was tough, reliable and almost cuddly.

"To all of you who made it all that it was, I send a quarter century's worth of thanks and congratulations."

Certainly a special letter from the first man on the moon. Very fine condition with mailing folds.
