Description

Gemini 3 Collection of Flown Items (Six) Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot John Young, Certified and Signed on the Display Frame. Attractively mounted on gold felt in a shadowbox frame of 13" x 10" along with an unflown 3.5" embroidered mission insignia patch are six items that went along with crewmembers Gus Grissom and John Young aboard The Molly Brown during their groundbreaking two-man, three-orbit flight on March 23, 1965. The items are as follows: (1) A small, Velcro-backed compass, 0.75" in diameter; (2) A black Velcro strap, approximately 13.5" x 0.75", with a metal slip-through at one end. This was used to attach his NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster chronograph to the pressure suit. Gemini 3 was the first mission where the use of this watch was officially sanctioned; (3-4) Two black plastic plugs, each approximately 1.25" long and 0.625" in diameter (at maximum); and (5-6) Two Scripto "classic" 1.1mm lead pencils. These appear to be standard issue with the twist-top lead advance save for the Velcro wrapped around the top area just beneath the eraser and some sort of a cloth wrapping down the length of the barrel (likely for easier gripping in space). Lead is present in both and both erasers show use.

Gemini 3 was an historic flight, testing the new two-man maneuverable spacecraft. The crew performed the first orbital maneuvers in space and accomplished the first manned reentry where the spacecraft produced lift to actually change its touchdown point. All flown items in very fine condition; the tape holding the back to the frame has dried out and is loose- easily replaced.

Four+ years after this mission, John Young was presented with a very special limited edition 18K Gold Omega Speedmaster Professional in honor of his (then) three successful missions. This watch is also available in this auction as Lot 41154.

On the back panel of the shadowbox, Young has written: " All items except the patch flown on GT-3. John Young".
