Description

Presented to Deke Slayton by Gus Grissom.

Apollo 1 Embroidered Mission Insignia Crew Patch by Stylized Emblem Co. Originally from the Personal Collection of Deke Slayton, with Signed COA from his Widow. This mission insignia had been designed by the crew; it pictures the Command/ Service Module orbiting the earth above the Florida launch point with the moon (the eventual target of the program) in the distance. The Apollo 1 flight was scheduled for a February 21, 1967, liftoff, but tragedy struck on January 27 when all three crewmembers perished in an onboard fire during a pre-launch test. This 3.5" diameter patch was one of the first produced and was originally given to fellow Mercury Seven astronaut Deke Slayton by Apollo 1 Commander Gus Grissom. On the verso is an original "Stylized Emblem Co." sticker. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Bobbie Slayton stating, in part: "...this Apollo 1 crew patch belonged to my husband, Deke Slayton, and was given to him by Gus Grissom... This patch is genuine in all respects."
