Description

One of only fifty flown. Designed by Frank Kelly Freas.

Skylab I (SL-2) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Directly from the Personal Collection of Backup Mission Commander Rusty Schweickart, Serial Number F23, with Signed LOA. This 35mm sterling silver medal is one of only fifty flown aboard Skylab I, May 25-June 22, 1973, with crewmembers Pete Conrad, Paul Weitz, and Joe Kerwin. There were a total of 300 minted for this flight. The obverse features the mission insignia, designed by the legendary science-fiction artist Frank Kelly Freas, depicting Skylab above the earth with the sun in the background. The reverse features the engraved launch dates of Skylab and the first Skylab crew as well as the date of the crew's return. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. Original case with numbered sticker on the bottom included. Excellent condition.

Following the loss of the thermal shield during the launch of the Skylab vehicle, Schweickart assumed responsibility for the development of hardware and procedures associated with erecting the emergency solar shade and deployment of the jammed solar array wing. These operations transformed Skylab from an imminent disaster to a highly successful program.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Russell L. Schweickart" on his personal letterhead, stating: "I hereby certify that this Skylab I silver Robbins medallion, serial # F23, was flown aboard the Skylab I mission in 1973. As a member of the astronaut office, I was permitted to purchase up to two Robbins medallions from each mission. This medallion has been part of my personal collection since the mission."
