Description

Apollo 13 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Rusty Schweickart, Serial Number 354, with Signed LOA. This 32mm sterling silver medal is one of 404 struck from metal flown aboard Apollo 13, April 11-17, 1970, with crewmembers Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. Due to the last minute crew change and the problems that prohibited Apollo 13 from accomplishing its mission, all of the original flown medallions were melted down and 404 newly designed sterling silver medallions were struck. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting three of Apollo's chariot horses flying toward the Moon, and the slogan "Ex Luna, Scientia" ("from the moon, knowledge"). The reverse features the names of the crewmembers, the modules, Aquarius (lunar) and Odyssey (command), the engraved dates of launch and return, the serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. Original case with numbered sticker on the bottom included. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Russell L. Schweickart" on his personal letterhead, stating: "I hereby certify that this Apollo 13 silver Robbins medallion, serial # 354, was flown aboard the Apollo 13 mission in 1970. As a member of the astronaut office, I was permitted to purchase up to two Robbins medallions from each mission. This medallion has been part of my personal collection since the mission."
