Spacecraft ID plate from LM-3, Apollo 9's Spider, the first lunar module to fly manned.
Apollo 9 Lunar Module Flown LM-3 Spacecraft Identification Plate Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart, Signed and Certified. Engraved on this 5.25" x 1.75" metal plaque from the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation is the following:COL. J. McDIVITT COL. D. SCOTT R. SCHWEICKART"
above the Part No. "LDW 280-53000-1, the Serial No. "033" and other information such as the Dsgn Cont No. "First Flight", Contr No. "NAS 9-1100", and "Launch Date 3-3-69 Splashdown 3-13-69". Note that the "D" in "McDivitt" is colored red in a manner similar to the mission insignia. Apollo 9 was the fourth (D) in the alphabetic sequence of pre-moon landing missions. Schweickart has signed on the verso: "I.D. Plate Flown with Me/ on Apollo 9, First Flight of/ the Lunar Module/ Rusty Schweickart". Three of these Lunar Module 3 Identification Plates were flown aboard Apollo 9 and returned to Grumman, who presented one to each crewmember.
In total, Grumman completed twelve lunar modules for NASA's Apollo program. LM-1 flew on the unmanned test flight of Apollo 5. LM-2 never flew and is on display at the National Air and Space Museum. LM-3, nicknamed Spider, spent ten days in Earth orbit with Apollo 9 where it passed all its docking and extraction tests. This was an important mission, seeking to check out numerous aspects that were critical in a successful trip to the moon and back. An extremely significant part of space history, worthy of inclusion in the finest of private or institutional collections. Excellent condition.
