Description

One of only 144 flown by Worden.

Apollo 15 Flown Herrick "Phases of the Moon" Crew-Signed Cover with Lester E. Winnick COA. A 5.5" x 3.5" philatelic cover with a 6¢ USPS stamp with an unofficial oval "Launch" stamp applied by Herrick and also a se-tenant pair of 8¢ "Decade of Achievement/ United States in Space" stamps cancelled on board the U.S.S. Okinawa on the splashdown date of August 7, 1971. At upper left is an applied color cachet sticker showing fifteen phases of the moon. The crew has signed at lower left: "Dave Scott", "Al Worden", and "Jim Irwin". An "F. Herrick Herrick" address label is affixed at lower right. On the verso is a round, red "Recovery" cancellation that was applied by Herrick. The original "Dear Friend" card stiffener is still present. The rear flap has been partially sealed and then opened causing a slight tear, otherwise excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.

There were 144 of these covers created by Herrick and flown by Worden in his PPK. They were properly reported and authorized to fly. After the splashdown, Worden had the additional stamps added and they were cancelled on board the recovery ship. The crewmembers then signed each one. Worden then sent all the covers to Herrick for safe keeping and finalization (where the "Launch" and "Recovery" stamps were applied). When the NASA investigation into the carrying of the Sieger covers was started, Worden requested that Herrick return all of them to him. Herrick had already sold some and claimed that others were damaged; Worden only received sixty covers and they were impounded by the government. Worden eventually got his sixty covers back in the 1980s. This is an example of the eighty-four that Herrick kept.

Included with this lot is a Certificate of Authenticity No, S-118 from Lester E. Winnick, dated May 2, 1975, stating, in full: "The cover photographed below has been carefully compared to those know to have been flown, and which are not in the possession of the United States Government, and has all the identical characteristics. It is therefore concluded that this cover was carried to the Moon and return by the crew of Apollo 15 and is genuine in all respects. In confirmation of this, I have marked the cover on the obverse with my signature."
