Number one of only eight that flew to the lunar surface.
Apollo 15 Lunar Module Flown "Shamrock" Cover Signed by Irwin, with Signed LOA from His Widow. A rare envelope bearing a cachet with three elements, a shamrock, a mission insignia, and an image of the LRV with two astronauts aboard. It is signed at top: "Carried to The Moon/ Jim Irwin". Numbered at lower left "1" (circled). Only eight of these were flown. Two were given to NASA associates and six were saved for his family. Mounted using archival corners to the certificate described below. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.Included with this lot is a 1999-dated Letter of Authenticity signed by Mrs. James Irwin on High Flight letterhead stating, in full: "This Apollo 15 shamrock postal cover was flown to the surface of the Moon in lunar module Falcon by my late husband, astronaut James Irwin. He has written on the cover: 'Carried to the Moon' and signed it next to the green shamrock. It is number 1 of 8 shamrock covers carried in Falcon and was on the lunar surface for over 66 hours. Apollo 15 was launched on 26 July 1971 and returned to earth on 7 August 1971. It was the fourth lunar landing of the Apollo Program."
