Description
James B. "Wild Bill" Hickok: A Very Rare Cabinet Photo in Superb Condition. All original photographic images of Hickok are considered rare. This beauty was taken by Rockwood Studios on Broadway in New York City, presumably in 1873 when Hickok starred, along with "Buffalo Bill" Cody, in the legendary play "Scouts of the Plains". This photo was purchased by the consignor in the mid-1990s at a New York auction, where it fetched $21,650. To our knowledge the only other appearance at auction of this image took place in Ohio auction in 2004, where a similar version, also on Rockwood mount, sold for $34,500. That example features the same pose, but with a solid background rather than the oval around his portrait found on the present copy.Condition is spectacular, surely unimprovable in a photo of this vintage. It is essentially near mint; for accuracy we do note a tiny amount of trivial wear on the lower left hand corner. One of the finest western images it has ever been in our privilege to offer.
