Description
Louis J. M. Daguerre Autograph Letter Signed "Daguerre". One page, 7.5" x 9.5", n.p., July 22, 1839. The French chemist Daguerre writes an unknown recipient about his "discovery": "I have received your kind letter and I am very grateful for the obliging offer you make me respecting the publication of my discovery in England. The transaction with the french government being not quite at an end I am still incertain [sic] according to what I shall do; consequently I am quite unable to give you a positive answer at this moment."A talented man full of diverse interests, Daguerre (1787-1851) was fascinated with illusions (he painted, invented the popular French diorama and manufactured mirrors). After several years of experimentation, he presented his most famous invention, the Daguerreotype, to the world in January 1839, only seven months prior to writing this letter. Though he received a patent for this earliest of photographic methods, he gave the process away in exchange for a pension from the French government. This letter is on toned paper with remnants of the seal on the verso. The bottom right corner has been repaired.
