Description

Twelve Volume Set of The Strand Magazine Originals Containing the First 24 Sherlock Holmes Stories (London: George Newnes, Ltd., 1891-1896), various paginations, beautiful half leather bindings with marbled boards and gilt spine titles, 8vo (6.5" x 9.5"). Marbled endpapers and edges. A long and fruitful marriage began between The Strand and Sherlock Holmes with the publication of "A Scandal in Bohemia" in the July 1891 issue of the magazine. Two longer works, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four had been published previously, but the popularity of Sherlock Holmes rocketed to the moon in The Strand. The stories in the collection presented here include the aforementioned "A Scandal in Bohemia", "The Adventure of a Speckled Band", "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb", "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches", "Silver Blaze", "The Crooked Man", "The Final Problem", and 17 more, just as they appeared to the Victorian reading public in London. These stories were later collected into the first two Sherlock Holmes collections, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. The volumes have moderate shelf wear, but are overall in very good or better condition. An amazing and handsome set of original Strand Sherlock Holmes.
