Description

Twelve Early Remington Arms Checks, each approximately 2.5" x 7", Ilion, New York, 1853-1854. Six checks are signed "E Remington & Sons" by company founder Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861) and six are signed, "S. Remington" by his second son, Samuel. The checks are illustrated with an engraved vignette of a young blacksmith, likely intended to represent the elder Remington in his youth. A blacksmith by trade, Remington made his own hunting rifle in 1816. The quality of his weapon generated orders for similar pieces and thus a firearms legend was born. The checks each have hairline splits in the center from being mounted on a sharp object. These are barely visible and do not detract from the checks' overall eye-appeal. Fine condition.
