Description

Spectacular 1936 "Quiet Birdmen" Pilot Portrait Album. Privately produced and published by the Quiet Birdmen, a fraternal organization of pilots founded in 1921 by Harvey Mummert and Harry Bruno, this album contains 141 pages of black-and-white photo portraits of member pilots. The portraits contained constitute a veritable "who's who" of early aviation: Eddie Rickenbacker, Charles Lindbergh, Clyde Pangborn, Ernst Udet, Jimmy Doolittle, Roscoe Turner, and over 500 other pilots, many who have become household names. This is the personal copy of Clifford Henderson, an aviation entrepreneur and executive director of the National Air Races. As such, several of the portraits have been signed or inscribed to him. The portraits are contained in an attractive grained-leather binder, 9" x 11.5", with an embossed Quiet Birdmen logo on the front cover and Henderson's name stamped in gilt on the cover and spine. Bound in front is a printed subscription letter containing information on how to submit photos for publication in the album and purchasing information. Included with the album is a brass Quiet Birdmen membership card, 2.25" x 4", in a leather case. The membership card belonged to Phil Henderson, Cliff's brother and business partner in several family business ventures. The album cover is slightly worn but the internal contents are sound and in near fine condition. From the collection of Cliff Henderson.
