Description

Julius Stockfleth (German/Texas 1857-1935). A Painting, "SS Orizaba" oil on canvas. Signed, Inscribed: "J. Stockfleth Galveston, " 20"x30", framed. Stamp on reverse "Purdy's Book Store, Galveston." Will be included in the Catalogue Raisonne written by William Ray Simpson. SS ORIZABA: Wooden side-wheeled steamer, built by Jacob A. Westervelt and Company New York (January 14, 1854), for the New York-New Orleans-Vera Cruz line of Morgan and Harris. The ship often stopped in Galveston for supplies and mail. At this point the painting was commissioned around the turn of the century. The ship went down in 1905 off the Coast of Australia.
